How Robotic FUE Is Different From The Traditional Process

What is FUE?

bald head

Robotic FUE is a minimally invasive procedure for surgical hair restoration than the standard excision procedure, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT).

FUT is better known as the traditional strip method which involves the removal of donor’s hair from the back of the head.

Despite being able to permanently solve the problem, it still leaves behind a linear scar, making it difficult to wear the hair short in the back.

What Is Robotic FUE?

The ARTAS Robotic FUE System is the advanced technology and branch of FUE procedure.

This is to harvest the follicular unit grafts one by one with unparalleled precision.

After the operation, in the donor area no linear scar is left behind and with no limitation on the physical activity, which a huge advantage of this procedure.

Under the optical guidance of the robot, this system locates and extracts each follicular unit according to its specification which is programmed by the physician.

The accuracy level is hundreds to thousands of times speed which is not achievable with the human hand. This robot can create holes, recipient sites, for placing the follicular unit grafts planned aesthetically by the physician.

How Is It Different From Strip Surgery?

In the process of FUT or strip harvesting, where a strip of tissue, 6 – 10 inch is cut open from the back of the scalp, sewed close immediately.

Under the microscope, each hair follicle is dissected in such a way that the still intact to the hair follicle and with a punch, the treatable area is punctured into small holes to insert the hair graft.

Whereas in FUE, the each follicular units are directly harvested from the donor area to the recipient area.

In the FUE procedure, the doctor manually selected the follicular units to be extracted, centres the device tool over the units, cuts the skin at a specific angle and depth and manually removes each follicular unit from the surrounding tissue.

The posterior part of the scalp is trimmed properly and under anesthesia, to make the hair follicles easier to identify and extract.

The ARTAS system is placed over the trimmed area for image processing which helps in identifying the different properties of hair follicle such as density, orientations and graft angles, and with the manual arms it makes dermal punches to perform the unit dissection, where the follicular units are manually planted into the recipient area, which is 50% faster than the normal procedure.

Patients undergoing this surgery can commence back to normal day to day life within one or two days.

Whereas in Robotic FUE, it minimizes this process with its manual arms, which at the same time takes care of all the parameters including evaluation of the hair, site depth, average spacing of two hair units and total incision sites.

This procedure keeps no room for human error and improves the quality of the hair restoration procedure.

The robotic FUE hair restoration procedure removes the chance of the visibility of scarring, by harvesting the hair follicle units individually from the patient’s head.

Random selection of follicles ensures that the donor area remains a natural looking as before the operation. Under the guidance of Robograft technique, it allows the surgeon to invest better time and energy as it is an artistic skill as well.

What Is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?

Thinning of hair, hair loss and baldness are quite common these days and many look towards a permanent solution for this ailment.

Permanent hair loss can be treated with hair replacement procedures one of which is hair transplantation. Hair transplantation is a cosmetic procedure where a surgeon removes hair follicles or grafts from the back of the head and places them on the bald areas or in areas with scant hair growth.

Hair replacement or hair transplantation procedures utilize your existing hair and are generally successful provided you go to an experienced dermatologist who has the skills to perform the procedure.

What Is Follicular Unit Transplantation?

Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) is a modern process of the traditional strip harvesting method. In this, the donor’s hair is harvested from a strip of skin as ‘donor site’ and the bald area that is to be covered is the recipient site.

It is a minimally invasive surgical technique that moves tissue or hair follicles from the donor site to the recipient site. Firstly, the surgeon cleans the scalp and inject anesthesia for any discomfort during the whole surgery.

A surgical suture is used strategically to hold the tissues together for extracting a strip of tissue, mostly 6- 10 inch strip of skin is dissected prudently from the patient’s donor area, from the back of the head and sews the scalp closed.

Then, under the microscope, each follicular unit is divided carefully into 500 – 2000 tiny grafts of hair, depending on hair texture, quality and color.

Each follicular graft dissected attentively since, these are surrounded by small glands of blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues which may get damaged leading to poor growth of hair.

After dissection, the surgeons with very fine needles puncture the site where it will be receiving the grafts in a pattern so that it grows and covers up the area later on.

It can provide 500-6000 grafts or 1000-1200+ of hair in one procedure.
For the first few 1- 4 months, the hair implanted will shed the original hair, which is normal and the next 4 – 8 months new hair will emerge taking up to further 2 – 3 months to thicken up.

Advantages of FUT
* FUT are preferable for candidates who have larger area of baldness.
* When there is scanty growth, and a wide area of the scalp can be covered in one sitting.
* Candidates who do not mind to cuts and stitches.
* Candidates who are comfortable with a longer period of recovery, 1-2 weeks mostly.
* FUT provides better yield, possibility of larger baldness is treated within affordable range.

Though a larger area of the scalp is covered and treated in one sitting, the only drawback of FUT is it leaves behind a prominent linear scar visible on the head, which if, minimum 1-inch hair length to be grown to cover this scar.

Cost Of FUT

Doctor’s qualification, experience, reputation, expertise, safety provisions, attention to details is an important factor which determines the cost of this surgery. Usually, the cost of each graft varies from $4 and $6 per graft.

Though there is no side effect after the surgery, once the anesthetic wears off, one might experience swelling, soreness and itching which can be subdued with prescriptive painkillers.
